The 1800s was an eclectic mix of many different kinds of fashion – regal aesthetics, individuality, frills, frocks, and extravagance. Clothing during this century was more than a by-product of innovation: it was a personal statement that spoke volumes about your background. The fashion world was saddened by the passing of legendary designer, Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, better known as “Coco,” at age 87. Her rigorous discipline to the very end helped her maintain an unheard of 50+ years of relevancy and influence on the fashion world. She remains to this day one of the most important fashion designers in history.

In the early 1870s the shoulders were allowed to return to the position nature intended. In 1876-78 the long line cuirass bodice appeared. This reached to the hips in all its molded, whale-boned glory. Day bodices had high necklines and fitted sleeves with pleated or ruffled cuffs at the wrists.
